THE SENECA HORNETS

The Seneca Hornets is a U13 girls travel soccer team currently playing in Division 2 of the Washington Area Girls Soccer (WAGS) League.   We are members of the Seneca Soccer Association, a club founded in 1984 that fields boys and girls teams from U-8 through U-19 and hosts the annual August Cup Tournament in Germantown, MD.  The girls attend a variety of schools throughout Montgomery County.   Most of the team has been playing together for over three years, with some members playing since the team's inception in 2005 and a few recent members.  Newcomers are always welcomed and encouraged to try out.

The team is, and has been since its inception, coached by Brett Menge, who holds a class E coaching license as sanctioned by the Maryland State Youth Soccer Association (MSYSA) and the United States Youth Soccer Association (USYSA).  The team has an impressive track record of success including back-to-back MD State Cup Futsal Championships in 2007 and 2008.   In the fall of 2008, the Hornets won their WAGS division with a record of 8-0-2 qualifying for a D-2 ranking this spring.  The Hornets consistently have been ranked as one of the top five teams in the State of Maryland.

In addition to its league play in the fall and spring, the Hornets have participated in numerous tournaments outside the Washington, DC Metropolitan Region including Cleveland, OH, Orlando, FL, Harrisburg, PA and Virginia Beach, VA.   The winter season sees the girls play in several indoor and futsal leagues to keep and enhance their skills.  Summer is filled with various local and regional tournaments.  Practices are generally two times a week in the spring and fall, once a week during the winter and summer practices are optional.

Although playing in the highly competitive WAGS League, the team promotes friendship and camaraderie between the girls and sportsmanship with competitors.   The Hornets also enjoy and share friendly relationships with several other clubs and teams throughout Maryland.  Although supported by and a member of the Seneca Soccer Association Club, the parents and coaches exercise significant control over the team's affairs from maintaining a reasonable fee structure to deciding its tournament participation and practice days and times.  The team generally holds two parent meetings each year, though parents may voice suggestions or concerns at any time.
